About Us

The Institute of Jute Technology (IJT) founded on 20th February, 1947 in joint collaboration with Indian Jute Mills’ Association (IJMA) and University of Calcutta is now a Registered Society (under W.B. Societies Registration Act XXVI of 1961) situated at 35, Ballygunge Circular Road, Kolkata - 700 019 in the State of West Bengal, India managed by a Governing Council with Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the helm of affairs as President and adequately represented by University of Calcutta, IJMA, Govt. of India and other organizations. The Institute is an Autonomous Aided Registered Society.

IJT with it’s heritage background of more than fifty-seven years is globally acknowledged as an unique place in the history of Jute HRD not only in this country but also in the world quite unchallenged till now. Over the years, this institute has come to mean much that was special as it has stood for the finest, the most consistent, showcasing the best HRD for Jute Industry through imparting all aspects of Jute Technology towards creating the essential skilled manpower resources to reclaim jute once again as a sunrise industry by interfacing IJT and Jute Industry to nurture it to become a seat of excellence. Creation of workers value provides the only basis for sustainable contribution to the super ordinate goal of creating national value as this spirit permeates the nature of it’s partnerships with the various constituents of it’s value chains including farmers, workers and educators. IJT’s governance structures, strategies and organizational processes have been fashioned to create growing and competitively superior value with the help of it’s good infrastructure including land and buildings, a pilot jute mill, laboratories equipped with latest machineries and instruments and a ‘state-of-the-art’ Computer Lab. towards continuous bench marking of quality to international levels.

The objects for which the said Society is established :
a)
To impart knowledge of Jute Technology thorough courses of instruction and promote research and other scientific work connected with jute trade and industry and trade and industries allied with or accessory thereto in all branches of Engineering and Technology pertaining to jute fibres, jute fabric, jute finished fabrics using 100% jute and also jute blended fabrics; to establish and maintain laboratories, workshops and conduct experiments therein.
b)
To prepare students for examination leading to award of degrees, diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions of the University of Calcutta, West Bengal State Council of Technical Education, All India Council of Technical Education and other academic authorities.
c)
To encourage and foster education of persons engaged in or likely to be engaged in the said trades or industries by organizing short-term training courses as required to cater to the needs of industry and other allied bodies.
d)
To edit, print, publish and exhibit books, papers and periodicals and to undertake literary activities bearing upon scientific matters especially with reference to the said trades or industries or any of them and to collect, compile and publish scientific data and other information relating to the said trades or industries; and to maintain libraries or museums for the said purpose; to employ skilled workers and professional, technical advisors to carry out the objects of the Institute and to pay therefore such remuneration as may be considered expedient.
e)
To encourage discoveries, to examine and publish information regarding the nature and merits of invention, improvements, materials and designs connected with the said trades or industries or any of them and to take and acquire patents or licenses relating to such inventions, improvements or processes and to acquire and register designs and standardization of marks.

The Institute offers regular 8-Semester B.Tech. in Jute & Fibre Technology Course and 8-Semester B.Tech. in Jute Technology Course. Degrees are awarded by the University of Calcutta. The admission of both B.Tech.Degree Courses through W.B.J.E.E.

The Institute started the 4-Semester M.Tech. Degree Course in Textile Technology (Technical Textiles) from the academic year 2005-2006. Degree for all the Under-graduate and Post-graduate courses are approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) vide their letter No. F. No. 750-80-106(E)/ET/95 dt. 02-05-2008 for 2008-2011.

In addition, every year, this Institute conducted two certificate courses viz., Junior Level Supervisors’ Course one in Spinning and one in Weaving each with a duration of three months. The two courses are meant only for the candidates sponsored by the Jute Industry who have at least three years’ experience but do not have any formal technical education. On demand of Jute Industry, the Institute will shortly introduce 2-Year Certificate Coursee in Jute Technology. The candidates will be sponsored by the Jute Industry.

The Institute not only organises training programmes for Jute Mill Sector but also caters to the need for HRD of the Decentralised Jute Sector which is gradually occupying an important role in the area of jute diversification.

The Institute also offers testing, inspection and technical services both to the centralised and decentralised sectors of the jute and allied Industries. The faculty members of the institute also carry out in-house and sponsored applied research projects. The major activities of the institute are highlighted in the activity chart.

The Institute of Jute Technology has three buildings: Main Building, Mill Block and New Building with a covered area of 8,140 sq.m. The Main Building consists of Principal's Room, Office, Class Rooms, Library, a few Laboratories and Students' Common Room. The auditorium has about 100 seats and is situated at the Ground Floor of the Main Building.

The Mill Block is equipped with Processing Machines for different fibres & blends. Pilot scale trials can be conducted at the Mill Block under actual commercial production condition. The two-storied new building is designed to provide Laboratories, Classrooms, Training Centre for both the Decentralised and the Centralised Jute Sectors and Conference Room.
